Why Students Should Be Making Films
Thursday October 15, 2026 8:00am - 9:00am EDT
Filmmaking presents an opportunity to engage students in any content by leveraging the power of storytelling. When students apply content knowledge to original story development and film production, learning moves beyond content-driven concepts. Film projects allow students to perform for authentic audiences, manage the real-world challenges of multimodal collaboration, and create original work that activates their sense of ambition and pride.

Authentically Askew: Assessing the Messy Process of Project-Based Learning
Thursday October 15, 2026 1:10pm - 2:10pm EDT
Even the best intentions of project-based learning tend to produce more than their fair share of dumpster projects: the wonderful things our learners make, we grade, and then pile up in the back of the room until the end of the year and whoosh. In this workshop, experiment with a number of methods for making PBL more formative, more standards-based, and ultimately, more authentic.

Measure & Model with Real-World 3D Map Data
Thursday October 15, 2026 2:20pm - 3:20pm EDT
Explore how real-world landscapes and sunlight data support problem solving. Using arcGIS, students measure building dimensions and shadows on 3D maps for locations of their choice. Projects include calculating sun angle and planning solar panel placement by analyzing usable roof surface area and estimating energy output. Bring a laptop or tablet.

Monster Making Mayhem: An Introduction to CompSci Basics
Friday October 16, 2026 8:00am - 9:00am EDT
Ditch the laptops and pick up the craft supplies, we are building monsters! In this hands-on workshop, educators dive into coding concepts like input, processing, and output by designing and “coding” their own creatures. This project blends creativity, collaboration, and unplugged computer science with natural connections to literacy and life science. Leave with a ready-to-use activity and the inspiration to bring STEM to life, no coding experience required!

Serving our communities: Finding the authentic audience.
Friday October 16, 2026 1:10pm - 2:10pm EDT
Students often ask, “Why are we learning this?” When the classroom teacher is the only one who sees student work, students often don’t see the real-world connections. In this session, we will explore technology tools and methods to create student projects that address problems in your school or community.
